My Classes

Attending Auburn University has offered me many amazing opportunities to learn about how children grow and develop. It has also allowed me to learn so much about myself and my interests in the process. Below are some of my favorite classes I have taken while working toward my degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a concentration in Child Life.

Child Development and Adolescent Development

These two classes helped further my interest in children and their development. In Child Development, we focused a lot on the theories of cognitive development and the stages of physical growth of a child up until the age of 12. We were asked to pick a popular film and relate it back to child development. I have included that in the space to the right of this section. In Adolescent Development, we focused on the psychological mind of the average teenager. One of the most interesting and unconventional assignments we had was writing a letter to our future teenage child. I included it to the right as well.

Advanced Child Life Seminar and Hospitalized Child

In these two classes, we looked at the life of a sick child. We talked about what stressors would be present for a child at each developmental level in the hospital. We learned how to teach coping skills to children in stressful situations, how to explain diagnoses in developmentally appropriate language, and therapeutic activities to relieve stress and promote coping. We also learned how to help a child through the bereavement process. I have included our diagnosis project and our bereavement project to the left.

Professional Development

In this class, I learned a lot about myself. We took many personality and strengths test, which made me better understand myself in a professional setting. I included our Personal Analysis Project to the right.

Interpersonal Skills

This class taught me how to properly communicate (speak and listen) with others and how to have an effective relationship with another person. This class really made me aware of some communication errors I was making and how to correct them. This class will help me in the work force to effectively communicate with co-workers. To the left is my communication assessment. I worked with a partner to assess our skills that we learned in class in order to work through a problem.

Introduction to Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies

In this class, I learned how to start my own nonprofit, how to gain 501C3 status, and how to be successful. To the right is my final project, where I worked with a group and researched a local nonprofit. We interviewed the local nonprofit and presented a PowerPoint to fellow classmates to share what we learned.

Undergraduate Research

I took part in undergraduate research for one semester at Alabama Healthy Marriage and Relationship Education Initiative (AHMREI). This organization's goal is to provide relationship education classes to people of all ages in order to foster healthy marriages and relationships. During my research, I took data from surveys taken before and after the relationship classes and entered it into the database, Statistical Package for the Social Science. It taught me to pay close attention to detail! I also took part in teaching teen relationship classes at Opelika High School. To the left is a link to the AHMREI website!
